Surf Reward Weekends
Surf Reward Weekends is a reward to inner city youngsters from outside Cornwall who have been involved in volunteering in their local communities. Many of these young people have never been to the sea prior to their visit and receive beach/sea safety awareness and some really fun surf sessions during the weekend.
Surf Reward Weekends will take place in October 2011, when 100 positive young people from inner city London and Newcastle will be rewarded with surfing. Four additional cities will take part in 2012, culminating in eight Surf Reward Weekends delivered in 2013, engaging a total of 700 young people.
The project is led by Community Action through Sport (CATS) which promotes, recognises and rewards young people for positive community action with sports-based awards. To ensure that young people have the opportunity to volunteer and take part in community action, CATS creates sports diversionary projects and works specifically with young people to create and deliver community projects.
Project partners include the Devon and Cornwall Police, Youth Services , Youth Offending team, Outdoor Education centres, Surf Life Saving GB and Surf GB, and secondary schools.
