Big Jurassic Classroom
The Big Jurassic Classroom will teach children and young people
about the Jurassic Coast and how UNESCO (United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) links to the IOC
during the curriculum year Sep 2011 – July 2012.
The aim is that children and young people will have a greater
awareness of how the 2012 Games will relate to them and that they
will be able to appreciate and be proud of the dramatic landscape
that will be the backdrop for the Sailing events. This project will
provide training and support for schools to teach their children
and young people about the Jurassic Coast and its links to the 2012
Games, and, on a wider level, the Olympic and Paralympic
Values. The project will also play a key role in engaging
schools with Get Set.
The project aspiration is that every school in Dorset and East
Devon will teach their children and young people about the Jurassic
Coast and its links to the London 2012 Olympics. The Jurassic
Coast Team will do this through offering all schools (through their
pyramid networks or school partnerships) an opportunity to book a
free-of-charge 2 hour teacher training session. The training
will be conducted using the new Jurassic Coast: Rocks and Fossils
curriculum pack together with a new supplementary booklet detailing
how to get involved with The Big Jurassic Classroom
project.
2012 Inspiration
The inspiration for this project has been drawn from how the IOC
values are strongly linked to the values of UNESCO and the World
Heritage programme. UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the
building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable
development and intercultural dialogue through education, the
sciences, culture, communication and information. The UNESCO
objectives compliment how the IOC promotes a culture of peace
through sport and friendship.
